Swamp Sowings
Swamp Sowings is an ecosystems essay film that centers on swamps and other wetlands in Virginia, as they exist in reality—as transitional zones between adjacent ecosystems—and as they exist in the imaginary—in film and in literature. Figure and ground, human and nonhuman, living and nonliving, fictional and nonfictional, natural and cultural, and other binary tensions are dissolved in favor of an integrated view of the wetland as landscape. These landscapes and their many organisms, histories, and processes, as well as horror, science fiction, and folklore serve as touchstones for investigation. As a work of ecosystems essay film, it attempts to draw the threads of connection between beings, processes, ideas, and stories that exist in the landscapes of wetlands—in particular, the wetlands of southeastern Virginia.
